Policy Training Academy & Community Safety Fair

Positive, sustainable change cannot happen without the expertise of the most impacted community.

Policy Training Academy

The primary goal of this week-long training is to help participants eliminate barriers that prevent community members from participating in local policymaking. We equip pro-Black organizations and community members with the same tools we use so that they can be even more effective advocates and changemakers. Participants will leave with well-supported proposals to present to the public, decision-makers, and the media; new or strengthened relationships with other community advocates; and a strong foundation to fight for change in the District.

Community Safety Fair

The Community Safety Fair is an opportunity for residents of the District to come together and learn from community leaders who rarely get a platform about how to co-create a sustainable #SafeAndFreeDC. Participants from DC Justice Lab’s Policy Training Academy present their ideas in a “science fair” format as guests walk around the event space. The Fair is both an opportunity to celebrate the participants’ hard work and dedication to the community and an invitation to dream and build together. During the event, anyone attending can speak directly with residents fighting to improve public safety in the District and join the effort to ensure the District’s policies reflect the people’s will.

NBC4 Washington coverage

“This fall, the DC Justice Lab hosted a week-long advocacy training bringing together impacted individuals, activists, nonprofit groups, and grassroots organizations to develop their solutions and learn the skills that can turn those solutions into sustainable policy proposals. Throughout the week, more than a dozen of these community leaders brought their diverse perspectives, experiences, and expertise to DC Justice Lab’s advocacy training.”
